Swelling hydrogels reinforced by complex architectures of stiff fibres can generate arbitrary complex movements as a function of hydration; these movements are exploited in nature in several different ways, as for example by plants to allow seed dispersion, dissemination and stress generation. In this framework I study the interaction of water with a swellable polymer, at molecular level, in hierarchically architectured tissues. The aim is to understand and describe the interplay between the thermodynamics of water sorption into the swellable polymers and the stress/movement generation as a function of the chemical nature of the polymers and the arrangement of the embedded stiff nanofibres. |
