Research Interests:

    My current research focus is the development of innovative spectroscopic methodology, specifically techniques based on Raman and Infra-Red (IR) spectroscopy imaging for use in characterising biological tissues and biomimetic materials. We are trying to understand the response of mineralized tissue (such as bone) to mechanical action and link the structural organisation and composition to the physical properties of the material. Furthermore, fundamental mechanisms of biomineralization are explored by studying several biological systems.
    During the past year, I was a postdoctoral scientist in the physical chemistry group of Prof. Salvatore Coluccia at the Department of Chemistry I.F.M. at the University of Torino, Italy. My main research focus was the development of Nuclear Magnetic Resonance (solid state NMR and unilateral NMR) and Infra-Red spectroscopy methods for the characterisation of materials such as collagen. This topic is related to my PhD dissertation work on the damage assessment of collagen in historical parchment using various spectroscopic and microscopic techniques. Currently, in collaboration with BAM, BESSY and University of Torino, I work on damage assessment of the Dead Sea Scrolls.

1996-2001
Degree in Chemistry Sciences at the University of Torino, Italy. (110/110 cum laude) Thesis title: “Molecular motions of organometallic compounds included in cyclodextrins studied by means of solid state NMR”.
2002-2005 PhD in Chemistry Sciences at the University of Torino, Italy. Thesis title: "Application of innovative techniques for the study of deterioration pathways within objects of cultural and artistic interest”
