In 1997 the International Joint Lab was established between the former Institute of Photographic Chemistry, CAS, in Beijing and the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces. It moved to the Institute of Chemistry, CAS, in 1999 and was signed as a new International Joint Lab by both institutes. In 2000, the Joint Lab was approved by the Max Planck Society and the Chinese Academy of Sciences as a Max Planck Partner group. With the interim evaluation by a scientific committee it was successfully demonstrated that the group has found a good compromise between cooperative research and developing an own unique profile. The research concentrates on developing biomimetic systems with some application perspectives. The collaborate work comprises topics like “Understanding enzymatic reactions at interfaces and the influence of inhibitors”, “Coupling lipid bilayers with polyelectrolyte capsules” and “Formation of microcapsules of lipids and cross-linked proteins.” Within six years of collaboration the joint lab has published over 60 contributions in international journals. On the average two sci-entists from the CAS worked at the MPI-KG and two scientists from the MPIKG visited the Beijing institute. 8 PhD theses and 6 master theses have been completed. The International Joint Lab is well recognized within a world-wide scientific community. Altogether the partner group has provided many examples of successful German-Chinese collaboration.
