SciFinder
Question: I have heard that there is the possibility to use the database SciFinder in our
institute. How can I receive access?
- The Max Planck Society has purchased accesses to the database SciFinder. Each of these
accesses is provided for one scientist only who needs a personal password.
If you are interested in an access, you can find information and the possibility
to register here.
A file won't open
Question: I would like to open a file of a journal this institute has access to, but somehow, it doesn't work on my computer. What's the problem?
- Are you sure we really do have access? Sometimes we have purchased the access
to the latter issues of a Journal only, like starting in 1993, or we don't have
access to articles published in the actual year.
- Have you allowed cookies on your computer? You must allow them:
Tools/Cookie Manager/Allow Cookies
- Your computer is runnig via a proxy server. This makes it impossible for the publishers to
identify your computer as belonging to our institute.
Please turn off the proxy server:
Start/settings/control panel/internet options/connections/LAN settings/use a proxy server...
No tick, please!
Inter Library loan
Question: I need an article which is not available online. What can I do?
- Did you check our holdings of printed journals?
- If we really don't have it: Order the article via e-mail or personally in the library. We will
try to get hold of it and provide you with it.
Of course we can also order books via inter library loan.
Borrowing a book
Question: I want to take a book to my office. What do I need to write onto the
loan slip?
- Very important is the accession number, the number on the Call Label, e.g. 98/245. You can find it on the very bottom of the
little sticker on the back of the book; it consists of the year of purchase and a consecutive number. This number
identifies the book undoubtedly.
- The classification number is important, e.g. PO-010, it identifies the location of the book on the shelves.
- Please put down your whole name. In the library we might not know who "Michi" or "Nick" is...
- It would be nice to have title and author of the book.
A book for the library
Question:I think a book is interesting, not only for me but for other scientists in the
institute as well. Therefore I would like to propose a purchase. What shall I do?
- Talk to your supervisor and, if he or she supports the idea, let us know about it in the library!
Scanner
Question:I would like to scan an article from our printed journals.
- The copy machine in our library can be used as scanner as well. It will send the article to your mail box
as a PDF.
For further information please contact us personally.
Bindingmachine
I would like to bind my paper. Is there a possibility in the institute?
There is a room in the cellar where you can find binding machines. Three different ways to bind a paper are
possible:
- Ringbinder: You can find the necessary rings and overlays on the shelves above these machines.
- Heat binding: Again you will find the material needed on the shelves above the binding machine.
Important: If you want to use a transparent overlay, be sure to use one of the heat-proof overlays for
this machine only - others will clot it up!
- Heat binding with hard cover and printed title: The material for this will be handed out by Ms Steininger
or the library. It might be necessary give an introduction .
