By plane

Berlin has two airports: Tegel and Schönefeld. A taxi to Golm costs about 50 Euro and takes 45-60 mins from either airport. The Institute can pre-arrange a taxi for you at a small discount. Renting a car at the airport is also an option. Public transportation takes one to one and a half hours. Buy a one-way ticket (Berlin-ABC Einzelfahrkarte), which costs 2.80 Euro and is good for two hours on all public buses, trams, and regional trains in berlin and Potsdam.

From Berlin Tegel airport take Express bus X9 to the zoo station, then follow the directions under rail.

From Berlin Schönefeld take bus 602 or local train RE 38 to Potsdam main station, then follow the directions under how to get from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof to Golm.

By train

Intercity trains usually stop either in Berlin-Wannsee, Berlin-Zoologischer Garten, or Berlin-Ostbahnhof. A few stop in Potsdam Central Station (Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof); when possible, ask for these when booking your tickets.

From Wannsee, Zoologischer Garten, Hauptbahnhof or Ostbahnhof, take the regional express train RE1 to Brandenburg or Magdeburg or the S7 and get off in Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof.

Note: If your connection requires a long a wait for a regional train, check the DB Online Travel Service for alternatives.

Some intercity trains come only as far as Berlin-Spandau or Berlin-Lichtenberg.

From Spandau, take the regional train RB 13 to Rathenow or Wustermark or the regional express train RE 4 to Stendal and switch in Wustermark to the regional train RB 21 going to Griebnitzsee. That train stops in Golm. Once you arrive in Golm, cross the bridge over the railroad tracks and follow the black asphalt footpath for about 500 m or so to the Max Planck campus. Alternatively, you can take a train to Zoologischer Garten or take bus 638 or 639 to Potsdam.

From Lichtenberg, you need to take a city train (S-Bahn) to Berlin Zoologischer Garten (S7) and then the regional express train RE1 to Brandenburg or Magdeburg and get off in Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof.

To get from Potsdam Hauptbahnhof to Golm, you have the following options:

• Hail a taxi to Golm (this will cost you around 15 Euro).
• Take a regional train. Both RB 21 to Wustermark and RB 20 to Oranienburg take nine minutes to get to Golm and run about once an hour.
• Take bus 605, 606 or X5 from Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof to the Golm train station. Once you arrive in Golm, pass the railway tunnel and follow the asphalt path to the Max Planck campus.
• Take bus 605, 606 or X5 from Potsdam-Hauptbahnhof, past the Golm train station, and directly to the Max Planck Campus. Buses take about half an hour to get to Golm but run every ten minutes. To catch either bus, ask for directions to the correct bus stop at the Hauptbahnhof help desk.

Once on campus, go to the central building. The receptionist there will contact someone to come meet you.

By car

If you are heading south or east toward Golm, get onto the western Berliner-Ring (Autobahn A10); take the Leest exit, then follow the road signs to Postdam. Pass through Potsdam-Grube and continue through the countryside until reaching a junction indicating the turn to Golm on the right. You will see the MPI campus on your left after about 500 m. Follow the signs saying Besucher (visitors) to the car park and then go to the central building. The receptionist there will contact someone to come meet you.

If heading north or west toward Golm, get onto the southern Berliner-Ring (Autobahn A10) and take the exit to Potsdam South (Süd). Follow highway B2 (yellow 2) to Potsdam. Drive through Potsdam following the road signs to Park Sanssouci, and then to Golm. In Golm, follow the main street (Reiherberg Strasse), veer to the right onto Bornimer Chaussee and continue until you see the MPI campus on your right. Follow the signs saying Besucher (visitors) to the car park and then go to the central building. The receptionist there will contact someone to come meet you.
