Resarch Topic:

“Biomass Derived Porous Carbonaceous Materials”

We focus on the production of porous carbon materials based on natural resources such as biomass or biomass derived components (carbohydrates). Thus, various porous materials are synthesised using templating techniques in the presence of various amphiphilic molecules or using the natural ability of various carbohydrates to assemble into organized phases. One of the carbonization techniques we are using consists in the microwave treatment of aqueous solutions of carbohydrates, leading thus to carbonaceous materials in only few hours and under mild temperatures. Furthermore the resulting porous materials can be doped with nitrogen or other nanoparticles expanding thus the range of application of these materials in fields such as catalysis, adsorption or energy storage.

Main focus of the project:

  • Production of porous carbonaceous materials using self-assembly
  • Characterization of the resulting carbon particles in terms of surface functionality morphology and structure
  • Testing the resulting materials in fields such chromatography, adsorption or electrochemistry
