International Conference on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Professor Reinhard Lipowsky

Two-day symposium „From Soft Matter to Bio-Systems “ 21.-22. November 2013, Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces in Potsdam

November 18, 2013

The symposium presents on the occasion of the 60th birthday of Reinhard Lipowsky a wide range of professional activities as currently pursued by former students and associates of the outstanding scientist. The hidden dimensions of self-organization as found in nanostructured soft matter and multiscale bio-systems are one major theme.

The latter systems are built up from a variety of modules that act cooperatively and provide many challenges for statistical mechanics and stochastic modeling. So for an example the transport processes in the cells of our body resemble the transport of goods on the roads. Molecular motors, which are special protein molecules, act as trucks. They carry the cellular cargo on piggy-back and transport it along microtubules, which are the roads of the cell.

Professor Reinhard Lipowsky

Professor Dr. Reinhard Lipowsky built up the Department of Theory & Bio-Systems in 1993, when the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces was founded.

Reinhard Lipowsky did his doctoral studies at the University of Munich, where he was also Professor of Theoretical Physics during 1989 and 1990. From 1990 until 1993 he was director at the Institute for Solid State Research (IFF), Research Center Jülich and Professor at the University of Cologne.
He is a member of the Berlin-Brandenburg Academy of Sciences, holds an honorary professorship at the University of Potsdam and the Humboldt-University Berlin and is the speaker of the International Max Planck Research School (IMPRS) on "Multiscale Bio-Systems".
