Curriculum

Winter Semester 2023/2024

The curriculum of the IMPRS consists of scientific/technical courses, soft-skills and transferable skills courses, and internal workshops.

Materials Design

Karola Dierichs (weißensee school of art and design berlin, MPIKG, Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity),
Pelin Asa, MSc (MPIKG, Cluster of Excellence Matters of Activity)

Description:
Materials science increasingly aims not only to understand existing materials but to develop – or in other words to design – entirely new ones (Reis, Jaeger et al. 2015). In-depth and consistent methodological approaches for this newly emerging field barely exist. In this context the lecture series aims to lay the methodological foundations for design in materials science.

In the winter term of 2023—24 we will focus on the design of thin membranes which enclose and are enclosed by a liquid such as air or water. We will look into their numerical modelling in Rhinoceros Grasshopper, we will make our own physical membrane models and we will develop design visions for future scenarios of these material systems.

Introduction to Applied Statistics

Angelo Valleriani (MPIKG)

Description: This introductory course will provide some basic tools to understand which methods are more appropriate in different situations. We will cover some aspects of probability theory, descriptive statistics, sampling theory, estimation methods based on confidence intervals, and hypothesis testing for means and proportions. The course will be delivered in presence, at the blackboard. Participants will receive some material for self-study and problems to solve at home in order to improve their understanding.
