Morphological Transitions of Vesicles (Budding, Tubulation, ...)

Vesicles are closed membrane "bags" that exhibit a large variety of different shapes and morphological transitions between these shapes. [1] [2] Such transitions can be induced, e.g., by small changes in temperature or osmotic conditions. [3] Particularly interesting examples are provided by domain-induced budding [4] [5], conformal diffusion [6], adhesion [7], and fusion [8] processes. Morphological transitions are also induced by ionic solutions in alternating electric fields [9] and by aqueous solutions that form two coexisting liquid phases [10]. For a recent review, see [11]
