Bridging the gap: Multiscale Bio-Systems from Molecules to Tissues
The graduate program of the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces (MPICI) starts a new call for applications. Interested and highly qualified students can apply from March 12th, 2018 for a PhD fellowship of the IMPRS on "Multiscale Bio-Systems" under https://imprs.mpikg.mpg.de. Deadline for applications is May 11th , 2018.
Research
The research field "Multiscale Bio-Systems" involves several levels of self-organization in biological, biomimetic, and bio-inspired systems. These different levels are reflected by the four research areas pursued within the school: molecular recognition of biopolymers, photo-induced molecular processes, cell-like systems and processes, and tissue-like systems and processes. The long-term goal is to understand, in a quantitative manner, how these processes emerge from and are controlled by the underlying molecular interactions.
Excellent doctoral training
The doctoral students at the IMPRS on “Multiscale Bio-Systems” work on challenging research projects at the forefront of science under the supervision of a thesis committee consisting of two supervisors and one mentor. The IMPRS supports the students via specialized lectures and advanced training; it also offers workshops on presentation and writing skills. The students are encouraged to attend courses in various research fields outside their own specialization. In addition, they have the opportunity to present their work at two annual workshops of the IMPRS and at international conferences. The IMPRS promotes the interactions between doctoral students and project leaders in order to achieve a lively exchange of ideas across the various disciplines.
General Framework
In collaboration with the University of Potsdam, the Free University Berlin and the Humboldt University Berlin, Prof. Reinhard Lipowsky at the MPICI has launched the IMPRS on “Multiscale Bio-Systems” in 2013. The IMPRS is a very international doctoral program in which more than half of the doctoral students come from abroad. Until May 2017 the IMPRS has recruited 36 doctoral students from 17 different countries, selected from more than 1400 applications. The funding of the IMPRS on Multiscale Bio-Systems has recently been extended for another six years, and the School can now admit 36 new students between 2018 and 2022.
The International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS)
The International Max Planck Research Schools (IMPRS) are an essential component of the doctoral program of the Max Planck Society since 2000. Talented and highly motivated students have the opportunity to carry out their doctoral studies in an excellent scientific environment. Two important aspects of these graduate programs at the Max Planck Institutes are strong collaborations with the participating universies and support for junior research group leaders.
