What we do

Synthetic Carbohydrate Conjugate Vaccines

Carbohydrates are present on bacteria as capsular polysaccharide (CPS), cell-wall polysaccharide (CWPS), exopolysaccharide (EPS), secondary cell-wall polysaccharide (SCWPS), lipopolysaccharide (LPS) and others. A lot of ground work is done to isolate and characterize these carbohydrates in the literature but their availability is meagre, and hence the biological evaluations are limited. To overcome this shortcoming the vaccine group dedicates its resources towards their synthesis. Ones the respective carbohydrate is synthesized, it is evaluated for biological functions and thereafter for potential applications in the field of vaccine development. Stemming also from this work is the development of protocols for the synthesis of rare sugars, new approaches in synthesis, new assays, new vaccine carrier concepts and delivery systems and other scientific developments.
