Adhesion of Membranes via Generic Interactions

Adjacent membranes experience a variety of repulsive and attractive interactions. At small separations, membranes strongly repel each other via hydration and protrusion forces. [1] At larger separations, they interact via van der Waals and electrostatic forces, which may be attractive and/or repulsive over a certain range of membrane separations. These molecular interactions are renormalized by shape fluctuations, which leads to unbinding transitions of interacting membranes. [2] [3] On larger scales, the resulting adhesion energy determines the shape of adhering vesicles. [4] [5]
