Adjacent membranes experience a variety of repulsive and attractive
interactions.
At small separations, membranes strongly repel each other via
hydration and protrusion forces.

At larger separations, they interact via van der Waals and electrostatic
forces, which may be attractive and/or repulsive over a certain range of
membrane separations.
These molecular interactions are renormalized by shape fluctuations,
which leads to unbinding transitions of interacting membranes.

On larger scales, the resulting adhesion energy determines the
shape of adhering vesicles.
