Hidden Dimensions
The research and control of very small or very thin structures in the nano- and micrometer regime is our goal. These tiny structures determine the properties of materials and bio-systems.
A deeper understanding is the key to many innovations, such as "intelligent" biomaterials. Also on the energy production of the future, the avoidance of CO2 emissions and the development of vaccines is being researched here.
Short Profile
The institute is managed collegially. The current Managing Director is Markus Antonietti.

Peter Seeberger - Director of the Department of Biomolecular Systems
Peter Fratzl - Director of the Department of Biomaterials
Silvia Vignolini - Director of the Department of Sustainable and Bio-inspired Materials
Markus Antonietti - Director of the Department of Colloid Chemistry

Vision and Mission

We want to combine scientific excellence with exceptional commitment in the supervision and support of young researchers. Our mission is to build a bridge from molecules to multi-scale materials and bio-systems, while providing the best possible support for young researchers.
original
Potsdam Science Park: WE LIVE SCIENCE.

Here, top international research and the training of young scientists in institutes of the largest German research associations and the University of Potsdam are combined with research-related business in start-up projects and in small and medium-sized enterprises to form a high-performance location.

Research

Biomaterials
Prof. Peter Fratzl
The overarching research area of the Department is biological materials science, which connects materials science and biology in a reciprocal way.
Biomolecular Systems
Prof. Peter H. Seeberger
The Department synthesizes "customized" sugar molecules and links them with other molecular groups.
Colloid Chemistry
Prof. Markus Antonietti
Research focuses on biomimetic systems that offer simple and sustainable solutions for global challenges such as the increasing energy demand and a global CO2 problem.
Sustainable and Bio-inspired Materials
Prof. Silvia Vignolini, Ph.D.
The research groups are tackling questions at the interface of chemistry, soft-matter physics, optics, and biology. The studies focus on how natural materials are ...

Toward sugar origami
Researchers at the MPICI have designed a carbohydrate sequence capable of folding into a stable secondary structure. Until now, such self-folding biopolymers had only been developed for DNA and proteins, and sugars were previously considered too flexible to assume a stable conformation.
