Re-use Policies issued by Publishers

...if you want to use parts or all of your own articles in your thesis. Most of these privileges refer to the print issue of your thesis, not to the pdf file that can be found online in a repository. These policies change from time to time, therefore we encourage you to check the attached links.

  • The Max Planck Society has an agreement with Springer and RSC (and other publishers) assuring that our authors (corresponding author) can publish open access in most of their Journals, APCs are paid centrally in Munic. Thus, your article being oa, you certainly can re-use it in your thesis, no permission needed.
  • In the list below we are referring to non oa articles.

American Chemical Society:

  • The re-use of complete journal articles as well as parts of it is usually permitted.
  • If you want to publish your science results prior to publication, the Journal might have special conditions: Prior Publication Policies.
  • You need to secure written confirmation from the editor or copyright@acs.org   
  • The article has to be cited properly, crediting ACS  ( how to: check "re-use" link above)
  • Publishing in electronic form:
    • You must also include a direct link to the article, using the "ACS Articles on Request" link you received from ACS.
    • You mustn't include a Preprint or Accepted Manuscript prior to publication. After publication of the paper, you may release the entire thesis.

Elsevier:

  • Inclusion of the preprint version in your thesis is permitted.
  • Inclusion of the Accepted Author Manuscript (peer reviewed, not yet layouted) is permitted.
  • The reuse of complete Journal Articles as well as parts of it is permitted, however:
    • Ask for permission via the "Get rights and content" link on your paper's Elsevier site

Wiley:

  • Author re-use rights vary between journals. Please refer to the copyright form you have signed.
  • You have signed the regular copyright form? You may reuse your article as long as it constitutes less than half of your thesis.
    • modifications should be noted
    • please cite, crediting Wiley: (Title of Article, Author, Journal Title and Volume/Issue Copyright © [year] copyrightowner as specified in the Journal)

Springer:

  • This agreement does not involve book chapters.
    • Please ask for permission
    • Please check the Licence or Statement you signed. As to the regular copyright form (§2) you may re-use your article in your thesis. Perhaps it makes sense to add "author retains the right to republish the contribution in his/her doctoral thesis", before signing the agreement in the first place.

Royal Society of Chemistry:

  • The Max Planck Society has an agreement with RSC assuring that our authors (corresponding author) can publish open access in most of their Journals, APCs are paid centrally in Munic. Thus, your article being oa, you certainly can re-use it in your thesis, no permission needed.
  • The Author may re-use his/her article in his/her thesis.
  • The Author may present their research ahead of publication in a thesis.
