Reinhard Lipowsky receives Ostwald Prize 2017 of Colloid Society

The most prestigious prize of the German Colloid Society, the worldwide oldest society in the area of colloid science, has been awarded to Reinhard Lipowsky, director at the Max Planck Institute of Colloids and Interfaces.  The award will be given to him in October 2017 during the general meeting of the Colloid Society at the Technical University of Munich. At  this meeting, the awardee will deliver a plenary talk about his most recent research.

Reinhard Lipowsky will be honored for his seminal contributions to colloid science in the context of Chemical and Biological Physics.  The director of the department “Theory & Bio-Systems” at the MPI of Colloids and Interfaces has introduced and elucidated many fundamental  concepts in these interdisciplinary research fields, such as morphological wetting transitions on structured surfaces, domain-induced budding and spontaneous tubulation of vesicles, as well as effective contact angles for liquid droplets interacting with bio-membranes. He also developed a concise theory for the multi-scale motility and the cooperative cargo transport by molecular motors. In all cases, one important objective of his theoretical work is the detection of quantitative relationships between experimentally accessible quantities.

Reinhard Lipowsky has published more than 400 papers in peer-reviewed journals (Google Scholar h-index: 78). A summary of his most important publications can be obtained via the following link (PDF document). He is also strongly committed to the training and promotion of young scientists: 15 of his former doctoral students and postdoctoral associates now have professorships in Germany, Europe, and the US.

Ostwald Prize
The Ostwald prize, which is named after Wolfgang Ostwald and represents the highest award of the German Colloid Society,  honors seminal contributions in the areas of basic and applied colloid science. The price consists of a certificate and a memorial coin.
